Some people like myself are allergic to silverplated mouthpieces, hence my (unfortunate) neccessity for goldplate. There was an excellent discussion about wet vs dry a litle further down, much of that can apply to gold vs silver as gold it usually wetter than silver. Nylon is used mostly for outdoors in extreme weather to keep your lips from freezing to metal, as far as I know.
