I've used Nevr-Dull for raw brass, finally getting the interior of the bell of my old Zeiss to have a golden glow. Mother's aluminum & mag polish wouldn't do it, and Brasso wouldn't quite reach the same level.

Once you get it polished, keep it clean by wiping it down every time you put it away. You could also have a cloth handy (like Louis Armstrong did), or go all the way and use gloves while playing. Air & dust won't make anywhere near of a mess of the finish as skin oils do overnight.

We also use Nevr-Dull regularly at 8th & I Marine Barracks for door hardware and such, including the ship's bell on the flagpole.
