It is possible that you are doing what I was some years ago in a quintet, listening and guaging my tempo and articulation at the mouthpiece end of the horn. My quintet was being coached that week by Mel Jernigan, bass trombonist with St. Louis, and he told me to try to just listen to what was coming out my bell, and synchronize that with what I was hearing from the rest of the group, essentially so our sounds would all meet at the same time. It made a world of difference, and it has made playing in ensembles of all sizes much easier for years now. It takes the guesswork out of playing in tempo.
