I think a 4/4 horn is the best choice for college (if you will only have one horn).
While it is true, you will be playing in band/orchestra, the real challenge in college, is the solo literature you will be learning. Solo stuff just works better, played on a 4/4 instrument (vs. 5/4 & 6/4) -- My opinion, of course, but in band, you will most likely have section mates, so you don't have to bury the group all by yourself ;-). As Robert poited out, orchestras at a college level are usually not big enough to require a huge horn, most 4/4 horns put out plenty of sound, for these situations.
