Changing the leadpipe will most certainly have an affect on the instrument. If the original leadpipe can be repaired, that would be the preferred option. Otherwise, a professional job of replacing it is the next best option. Leadpipes are available for that instrument in yellow brass, rose brass or nickel-silver. Yellow brass is the least expensive and works well, rose brass is softer, gives a sweeter response and is rot-resistant, and nickel-silver is the hardest, should last several hundred years.
