Hi Rick,

if you've played a Bach 18 before and liked it, then get one of those again. They're cheaper than a lot of other mouthpieces, and generally considered to be good all-rounders.

Opinions vary on what valve oil to use. I would guess that a 70 year old horn's valves are not too tight, so a medium or heavy density oil would be best. If you really want to research it, see: http://www.musichem.com/articles/p_oil_e.htm

If I were you I'd probably just dump some cheap oil like Al Cass or King rotor oil down each slide and on the bearings (under the valve backplate and on the front spindle). This site has more detail: http://www.stusmusic.com/icrotor.html If you're really brave you can try removing the valves: http://ic.net/~cmctuba/brass/Rep.1.html but this isn't necessary unless there's a problem.

There's lots on maintaining a rotary horn in the archives.

Let us know how it works out.

Cheers,

Ian
