Two words: Icy Hot. The tuba will hurt like hell while you're wearing it, but after about a week you get used to it. I know they usually saddle the rookie/recent switchover with the crappiest sousaphone in the section, but if possible, try to use the lightest and/or best condition horn--it'll save you shoulder/back pain and trouble adjusting (can't see behind the bell, lead pipe too short, etc).
