What I'm really warning against is the distortion of the embouchure that must occur to buzz in the "money" register without a mouthpiece. If you are buzzing freely, you must be buzzing in a rather high register. It is virtually impossible to buzz below the staff with just the rim. If you can do it, make sure that you are not puckering. Ultimately, the mouthpiece or rim "playing" (not just buzzing -- Jake said to make sure that it is all musical) needs to be the same as when you play the instrument, allowing, of course, for altered resistance!!!
