Whenever I have a really tricky piece and the timing just won't work for me, I'll do one of two things:
1. Practice with a metronome (which you didn't want to hear about)
2. Enter the music into a software program, such as Finale, and play it back until the timing "gets into my head."
If you're just wanting to practice on "keeping time" at a steady tempo, or want to work on improv skills, try Band in a Box.
