I was interested in your observation about some large concert bands in Europe with lots of cellos and string basses. In 1952, I saw the US Army Field Band on tour. Two cellos were used next to the bassoonists. Two string basses were right back there with the tubas. There was also a harp. Strings can really sound great in certain passages in band music.
