I was asked in a recent rehearsal to play my tuning pitch down, playing it on the underside of 440 first, and then bringing it up to "zero". (The oboe plays the B-flat and then I play it with her, and then the brass joins.) The conductor thought that certain sections would tend to automatically play high if the pitch started higher and then came down. It makes sense, it seems initial sounds tend to stay in the ear (at least with me).
Maybe this is a consideration?
