Three strikes - you're out.

a) he's not incompetent. On all counts he's an excellent conductor, with
many years of high quality experience. On the other hand, he *is* a trumpet player.
b) his tuner (if he's using one - I think so, but am not sure) is not likely
to be broken.
c) chords have nothing to do with it. I observed the "20 cents flat" tendency on
comments made to SINGLE instruments playing SINGLE notes.

I believe the 20 cents flat (from A=440) is intentional. The only question is...why?

On balance, I tend towards the explanation that the band will tend sharp (it's a very amateur group - as anyone who has heard me play will instantly realize), so it makes sense to start flat.

Of course, it might be that *my* tuner is "broken". Instrument placement is *not* an issue - the tuner showed the same tendency for instruments right next to the tuner as it did for those on the other side of the band.

Gotta get a longer tuning slide...or another tuba...hmmm - there's an idea!
