Bill Scharnberg at the University of North Texas is an outstanding teacher (although I was a tuba performance major I took a semester of lessons with him) and a very nice guy. UNT has a very strong music ed. department with two excellent band directors--they may have the most music ed. grads in the country (certainly in Texas and isn't that what matters?) : >)
Not in the northeast, but definitely worth looking at...
