Dee,
As a player, I'm no Porkorny or Deck! In fact, I've returned to playing after a 15 year hiatus. I made an appointment, which is an important courtesy, and told Matt beforehand the sort of horn I was seeking. Matt already had instruments in mind for me to try. I brought my favorite mouthpieces, my playing stand, some music and he set me up. Every so often he'd come to check to see how things were going. He'd also bring different horns to try : "try this 2155, I know it's a piston horn, but see how you like it..." Yes, it's a little intimidating at first, but I was quickly made to feel welcome. Just avoid pretenses and you'll be fine.
