Thank you all so much for you insight and advice, I guess maybe I should have been a little more specific as to why the change of lead pipe. Well, the guy who owned the tuba before me actually cut the lead pipe and inch or so so he could have it lowered, so it would sit in his lap and he could reach the mouthpiece ok. The pipe actually sits an inch lower on the bell. He must have had no thought for the fact that it would make the instrument very sharp intonation-wise. So this is why I asked about the effects of a brand new lead pipe being put on the tuba. It feels good now, just that some intonation is out, sharp obviously, the main tuning slide is out a fair way.
So, I see that a new pipe is the only way to go, and I bought the instrument initially as it was the only one around and I needed it for work, so there was no compromise. Anyway, any further insights or advice would be most appreciated.
