I agree with DP-----there should not be any defense for "purposeful blattyism". Musicianship and musical taste should always be the paramount consideration when playing tuba, bass trombone, or any other instrument. There are so many brass players that I admire for their tasteful restraint. (I'm sure they could blow the walls down if they wanted to do so, but they don't.) One of the musically great tuba players that I really like is Floyd Cooley. On bass trombone, it's Blair Bollinger. These performers are examples of musicians first, brass players second. There are many others.
