I guess it just has to do with the interaction of mouthpiece, horn and player. I also have an Art Lehman special. It's an original that belonged to Art, so I don't known how it compares to yours. But, this mouthpiece also has a bright sound. The sound is certainly larger than the 51D, but it has an edge to it that the 51D doesn't have. A fellow player that studied with Art for 20+ years said the same thing. When he used the Lehman on a Besson, he loved it, but when he switched to a Willson, he thought the sound was "buzzy" and switched to a 51D. I am going to speak to Doug and see if he has any suggestions, because I really don't likethe feel of the 51D.
