I wasn't aware that this was a problem, but in a recent lesson at OU, my teacher and I got onto the subject of mouthpieces, and he said that he, if sent heavy mouthpieces to demo, would usually send them back, because of the effects they had on his lips. So, the fact that FD might be from over-exertion and equipment might perhaps be true. However, if you could modify a tuba like Miraphone did with the 187 so that bigger sound could be attained from the same-size horn, and use a reasonably sized and weighted(i.e.Mira TU29)mouthpiece that also got you that sound, then why would the "arms race" have been an issue?
