"I knew a very talented euphonium player who played with air between their lips and teeth - right under the mouthpiece"
I'm not convinced this is bad. Who says the lips have to contact the teeth, at least with any significant pressure?
If I play with light mouthpiece pressure and a lot of air support, I have noticed that
my lip becomes more flexible. Yes there are times when there is air between lip and teeth, but why is this to be avoided?
