Trombones and tuba in combination are sometimes thought of as "The louder the better". Perhaps they should only be loud enough to approximate what the conductor thinks is musically appropriate for a given piece. Ego maniacs should never be granted a license to drive low brass instruments. Richard Strauss is purported to have once said (jokingly?), "Don't look at the trombones----it only encourages them".
