Well, you can use a good chemical stripper like Jasco Paint and Varnish remover or Bix Tough Job stripper. If you're intent on leaving the tone color of your instrument unaffected, you probably should use a nitrocellulose-based lacquer, as these dry thin and hard. Nikolas makes several types that are pretty good.

Clean, clean, clean is the watchword here--not a bit of oil or grease must be on the instrument. The usual precautions involving even application, runs and drips need to be observed. And nitrocellulose lacquer is extremely flammable.

Seems to me that there was a post quite awhile ago about a marching band using 20Js that had been finished in an opaque lacquer. They actually looked pretty sharp.
