In belated response to an earlier thread, I have just listened to two of this cycle.
Nos. 3 & 4 are very good indeed and indeed as good as I remember them live ( Philly 2001)
but 2 & 5(especially No.2 ) are terrific. Vanska has a real handle on this stuff.
The trombones/tuba are massive - check out the octave stuff in the slow movt of No.2.
This is a serious band and I have to say that I do really like what the tuba is doing
on this series. The guy was using a Besson EEb when I saw them live and the low brass
were that massive live too !! Has this band taken over from the Scottish National and
Jarvi and their recordings in the 1980s ? Seriously - check them out !!
