I have thought hard about buying a straight leadpipe from the factory (with the modern taper/receiver) and fitting it to my horn to make a direct comparison. This would entail the crafting (or buying) of some hardware to allow switching the pipes like on a PT tuba. This would allow me to really see just what is going on, and would be a wonderful time waster for the weekends.

I see what you are saying about the resistance being built into the bugle, but would that not equate to a certain perceived resistance when I play? My horn draws the air out of me, it seems, and not vice versa. I have played four or five other 163s that had this "feature", and all were CCs; whereas the BBb versions have all been much more resistant (and kinda stiff, too).

I would like to have been able to have tried that venturi too. Sounds pretty nice.
