Variants is a piece for euphoniumists, that, like Arban, can be re-visited and re-polished, tackling very different technical and aesthetic challenges. I recently performed this piece at a Music Educators Convention with band accompaniment(having also done it at my undergrad senior recital 11 years ago) and it reminded me again of just what it takes to do it well.

My 2 cents? Find a piece not quite at this calibre, hone it till it shows every one of your strengths and refines your weaknesses, and use that. Those who adjudicate are prone to being turned off by a great piece which is attempted by someone not quite ready-
