I mostly use my sousaphone during soft woodwind cues. Its bell-front configuration really shines at those moments.
Sometimes during a really exciting tacit sheet, I will dive in and double the 1st violins. It adds so much to the feeling of spontaneity created by a live performance. For added zest, I loosen the top valve caps a tiny bit during long scalar runs. Really.
It is really a wonderful instrument; 6/4, I believe. (A BAT is always better, right?)
