Protools does not run on win 2k or Linux, the OS versions I happen to be running. Cool Edit sounds good, but the hardest part of this is that for a complete and utter novice, finding the right information is a slow process, so I am still in the process of making lists and figuring out what works and what I truly need. Just in case you are interested, my lists look like this at this point (understand that I know next to nothing about anything at this point, I'm still in the web surfeit of info mode ;<):
