As it was explained to me, and what I think is a great philosophy, is this:
The best players are motivated to be process-based, not product-based. They practice to be a better tuba player, not to win 'the job.' If winning were all they practiced for, what would they do once they won? They focus on improving themselves as a player first and foremost, and that usually leaves enough to be desired that they keep coming back.
As far as time that they spend practicing? I would imagine that most pros treat playing like a job, since, in fact, it is one to them, so that would be about 40 hours a week.
