Without seeing/hearing the student this is tough. However, most students who don't know where the pitch is, chip them. One has to be able to "hear" the pitch before one can play it. It isn't a matter of feel alone, it's a matter of the sound of the pitch and the physical feel of the pitch which includes the amount of air used and the buzz of the lips in the mouthpiece.

There is really only 1 way to solve the problem:
1) Have the student sing the exercise accurately many times
2) Have the student buzz the exercise accurately many times
3) Have the student play the exercise accurately many times

In other words, repetitious practice is the cure.
