You have described perfectly the process I went through during a year of figuring out how to play the tuba. I started out with a "horn" embouchure with 2/3 upper lip. It didn't work very well, and not only because the mouthpiece was smashing my nose; I ended up probably pretty close to 50/50 and now use a flexible lower lip to do my range changing, with the trickiest part right in the middle as you describe...where the lips are even-steven, and the closest to "pinching" to get a note. Very interesting technical description. Now I'm trying to apply that same concept to horn, since tuba playing is so much easier for me despite considerably less time on the instrument. I've always felt I had a weak upper lip.
