I have a friend in the instrument repair business and he has mentioned this before to me on the same idea that you have. He has a lot of health problems from working with brass for so many years. You will get brass poisoning if you use the mouthpiece in raw brass. I am told that it can make you pretty sick too. I think it is more critical on a mouthpiece than an unfinished horn because your facial tissues are more sensitive than you hands are. I would highly recommend getting your mouthpieces replated.
