Just to clarify terminology, many top corps are now referring to "sopranos" as trumpets and "Contras" as tubas. Also, it is now possible to read contra (tuba) music in Bass clef. When I was in the Blue Devils in the mid 1980s we read treble clef. Honestly, I really don't know how many of the players could actually read much music at all.
I would agree that drum corps has changed alot. However, I think that it is much more valid as an educational endevor now than it ever was in the "good old days."
