There is a dance band quartet in my area that I play bass in. As an attention getter, I use tuba in 4 or 5 songs. The group has its loyal followers, but the addition of some tuba color has had old timers commenting on how the addition adds a more authentic flare to the set. Of course, they come from the era where tuba was used more effectively than upright in the dance band setting.
Its cool to have the swing and the solos come from the tuba. I truely have fun at those gigs, where I am more business at just upright gigs.
