Your lips and particularly the inner lining of your lips and tongue easily absorb all sorts of toxic metal alloys that are mixed in with the brass. Why do you think a heart patient places a nitro-glycerin tablet under their tongue? It's the fastest way to the bloodstream without injecting it. Same goes for the toxic stuff in an unplated mouthpiece, particularly when it gets dissolved in saliva. Gold plating is best, untarnished silver is second best. Why temp fate and risk liver or brain damage?
