Stuck rotaries are common after disuse. My method for freeing them is to sit with the tuba over a watertight bucket or basket, and pour very hot water into the first slide using a funnel. Small quantities at first. Do not force the valves, but use a gentle rocking motion until they come free. Exit the water through the spit valve and follow with your regular water scavanging routine. Repeat, do not force the valves. After the horn has dried, drop about 4 short squirts of valve oil into the lead pipe, insert the mouthpiece and play the first five characteristic studies from the Arban book. Do this each day you begin using the horn. While waiting to free up the first valve, work the slide slowly in and out to seep water around the valve. Harry C.
