You have correctly discerned the purpose in my question.I have been confused by the variations between the various qualities of a given sound, and the strict quantitative
analysis of that sound using lab equipment.
But,this has not greatly impaired my own ability to alter my sound, nor analyze and appreciate the sounds of others.
We should,as tubists, have a comprehensive FAQ.Besides describing the standard procedures for posting on our various forums (Tubenet,alt.music.tuba,tubaeuph,etc.),it should define some of the terms we use so freely in our discussions. In first meeting another tubist,it is easy to forget that, unlike many of us,they do not have huge libraries of technical books, that they don't own the Tuba Source Book,Song and Wind,a TUBA membership,an extensive collection of tuba recordings, and so on.
Thanks for all the responses,it has clarified my understanding of a difficult concept.
