There's very little choice. You have to cut somewhere to make the horn shorter.

The good news is that if you cut cylindrical tubing you have the least effect on pitch. That means if you can cut the tuning slide's inner and outer tubing you can bring the pitch up without having catastrophic changes to the horn.

I've done it to several tubas without noticable consequences. Get a good repairman so that everything lines up.
