The "magic" required to do full text searches is for the list owner or administrator to periodically compute an index to the archives, then add a clickable search mechanism. To do this normally requires that the server support CGI scripts (some don't for security reasons). One site with a search engine example is:

Once this mechanism is understood, a programmer could write something that runs a bit faster.
