My list of favorite pieces to play differs somewhat from my favorite pieces to listen to. Perhaps this is true for other BBS readers, too.

TO PLAY:

Band/Wind Ensemble: James Barnes: Symphony #3. This begins with a beautiful tuba solo. Other parts of the piece are very rewarding for the tuba player. It's quite evident that Barnes is a tubist!

Orchestra: Shostakovich: Festive Overture (also in its wind ensemble transcription);
Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries

Brass Band: Elgar: Severn Suite

TO LISTEN (but also fun to play):

Tchaikovsky: Symphony #4
Verdi: Requiem
Bernstein: Chichester Psalms
Gershwin: An American in Paris (yes, the tuba solo is cool, but I like the work as a whole)
Orff: Carmina Burana
Respighi: Pines of Rome (yes, Fountains has THAT tuba excerpt, but I prefer Pines)
