I haven't priced airline tickets to/from England lately, but couldn't you just about pay for a round-trip ticket for $700? If you know of someone flying to England, could you get them to check the case as baggage?
Another alternative to consider: there is an excellent, aluminum shipping case made in Germany and sold by Walter Nirschl (among others, I am sure). It is very light and very strong (comparable to the Johnson case), ATA rated, and fits in many automobile back seats.
