Good point. The reasons that I still like the Arban trombone method are:
a.) it is cheaper (or used to be, I have not checked in years)
b.) I think that it is important to be fluent in octave transposition, more then once I have been handed bass parts on a paid jobs (especially the circus when they used tuba in the good old days, they had a mix of bass and tuba parts in their books).
Somewhat off the point, it is sad that the circus went to electric bass, Ringling Brothers Circus (Blue Unit) was my favorite job when they would preform in my local. No other job was quite like it, and my opinion is that a circus band should have a tuba.
