I won't poo-poo your or Jay's observations, and will guess at explanations:
Trumpets: Trumpets, like oboes/ violins/etc. are very small and SUPER-sensitive to EVERYTHING, and I find that any two "like" trumpets (regardless of their finishes) will vary more than any two "like" tubas or baritones.
Lacquer vs. Silver Plate: uhhh...MAYBE, but I would bet that if you really DO observe a difference, the reason is that the lacquered one has a coating of thicker plastic-like (possibly tone-deadening) material on it - THE LACQUER. I would predict VIRTUALLY ZERO difference in a silver plated tuba vs. a raw brass tuba - all other things being (in an ideal situation) identical (which would NEVER be the case).
...Well, whut 'cha thaink o' them thangs?
