All of the ideas below are great, but let me make a suggestion for a 'tuba' he can play today. Take about 8 feet of garden hose (1/2 inch), wind it around in a circle like a sousaphone and glue or clamp it together. Stick a funnel in one end and a trombone mouthpiece in the other. This is a 'tenor tuba' version of the 'hosaphone'. It has an overtone series comparable to a trombone, so he can learn to do bugle calls. Then get him some tuba recordings to 'play along' with. He builds the chops, dreams of playing the tuba, and has an indestructable instrument! Mom and dad will also forgive you, because it's not all that loud. Good luck!
