From experience, I'd say that if you have a horn made of thick brass, a gig bag will do fine. However, if you're playing a thin-brass horn (like a Kalison or Cerveny), go for the hard case. Even though I'm very careful with my Kalison, it always seems to end up with little dings after I take it anywhere in the bag.
