If you need to have the horn cut, be certain to cut only straight tubing - don't cut anything that's tapered. I did this on my Besson E-flat, and have had no problems ever since. It didn't change the horn in any way, except raise the pitch a wee bit.
Don't let any repairmen talk you into any quick fixes, like shortening the lead pipe - forget it. I've never had a lot of success turning down mouthpiece shanks either. That really seemed to change playing characteristics, for me anyway.
