As others have said, each has its application in different situations/environments.

GOLDEN RULE with gig bags:... you must treat the bagged horn as though it is NAKED!
(even then, little accidents still DO happen).

If I am not sure what the scenario will be at a particular gig re:

1. How far away I may need to park my car
2. Stairs (and long circuitous distances hiked within building complexes)
3. Proximity of changeroom to performance area
4. Shared, small, or NO backstage areas
5. Storing my horn between soundcheck/gig, sets, etc.

I take **BOTH** the gig back and hard case, and decide which would serve me better when I have investigated the venue. I have OFTEN been very very glad that I kept my options open by taking both.

I am usually driving, so that's a help.
