The Bass Horn was made for Roger in the late 70’s by the late Larry Minick in Los Angeles. The tubing and the valve set were given to Roger as a gift from the Mirafone Corporation. The entire horn was hand made (the old fashioned way!) out of Nickel Silver as a Bass Horn from the start. I had this instrument in my possession for a year and a half while Roger was on sabbatical in 1989-90. The horn plays great. It’s in tune and it really does sound like a Horn not a Tuba. It’s hard to tell from the recording because of the close mics etc..

At the LA Phil institute in 82’ Roger conducted the Tomasi Liturgical Fanfares and had the other student tubaist play the bottom horn part on the bass horn. Wow, what a sound. It really filled out the bottom end of the horns. Too bad there aren’t more of these instruments around.

One more thing, the horn is in CC not in F or it would be the same length as a standard horn.
