Doing quite a bit of doubling myself, I don't feel your inquirey is inapproproate in this setting. I'd stay away from the big, pancake bells. Their sound doesn't focus and it spreads in volumes much beyond mf+. Ther is a reason all (most!) of the great bass bonists use the 9.5 bell. Like I said concerning other purchases, play ALL the horns in your price range, and buy the one that has the sound YOU are looking for. A small tape recorder will help you, bring it along while you try horns out. You could also bring someone whose opinion is improtant to you to see what (s)he thinks. Ultimately, YOU have to be happy with your sound, so pick YOUR horn.
