The red ring is normal, just make sure it's caused by increased blood flow and not too much pressure on the mouthpiece. If there's an indentation ring, or it looks like you've been blowing on a hot exhaust pipe, then you're probably pressing into the mouthpiece too much.
As for the position, I play dead-center, which is where everyone I know sets it. I don't know though. Are there any off-center players out there? (embochure-wise, I mean).
