Don Butterfield came up with a practical reason for raising the pipe; it was so he could use both eyes to read charts and watch the conductor. As far as vibrations are concerned, has it ever occurred to anyone that metal vibrations must be influenced strongly by how we hold the instrument? Different people will hold the same instrument in different ways, and that's got to make more differences than lead pipe placement. But such difference are still insignificant compared to the difference between one model of tuba and another. As I have mentioned before, I believe that less metal vibration is generally better, since it means less energy robbed from the air vibrations.
