but at one's discretion the "open" version sounds rounder and the "all-valves-down" more matches the sound of your next-door neighbor (Mr. Bassbone).

I used the "all-six-valves" low F when I played the John Williams several years ago. The reason that I did so was so that the tone of the loud low F's in the first movement would better match the tone quality of the other loud low notes. It took some quick #5 slide jammin' to keep the Bb and A in tune, but I decided that it was worth the trouble.
